This is an incredibly interesting transitional mixed media abstract assemblage by Islwyn Watkins, dating to the early 1960s. This piece provides a link from his transition of painting on canvas to constructing the three dimensional assemblages be became so well known for. This particular example has the basis of an oil on canvase with applied sacking and then constructing wooden shapes. It has been framed by him, fairly recently and has his writing to the reverse describing the piece. I assume he must have tried to sell this piece in his shop in Knighton before his death. It measures 82.5cm x 68cm
